Boats have been made in Canada for about 10,000 to 14,000 years. Famous examples are the birch bark canoe of the Eastern Woodland tribes, the kayak and umiak of the Inuit and the cedar dugout canoes of the Haida and coastal tribes.

When Canada was "discovered" by Europeans in the periods following 1000 CE the Vikings, Basque and French all built and repaired boats of various sizes to European standards.
