As far as I know, Network should be included because there were many earlier instances of email within a single machine. Computer networks, in any real sense, didn't exist until the ARPANET was built starting in 1969. Dick Watson proposed a form of email in July 1971 (RFC 196). I don't think that was ever implemented. It differed in that the mail was directed to numeric mailboxes. RFC 196 also suggests that the final product would be a printer output (i.e. ink on paper). SNDMSG sent messages to named individuals (computer users).
The year was 1990's when the first text message was ever sent out.

A Letter Message (electronic messages of a letter) is an electronic circuit that spells out a personal message, one letter at a time. It's one of those personal technologies that I build for other people who request it. The device has a single alpha-numeric display that flashes single characters sequentially in order to communicate a given message. The message repeats over and over again as long as a 9 volt power source is applied (Typically a 9 volt battery). The purpose of a letter message is to relay a personal message to someone in a way that is special and unique; kind of like a greeting card. However, a letter message is more unique because the message is immortalized in technology. The circuit is a hard-wired circuit, not something that can be changed by hitting "delete", and re-editing. The sole purpose of the device is to display a special message to someone under special circumstances. The Related Link below, entitled "Letter Message" in the "Sources and Related Links" section, talks more about the Letter Message including how to get one sent to someone. It's basically a more unique alternative to a greeting card.
