The first docking in space was performed by Neil Armstrong and Dave Scott aboard Gemini 8 on March 16, 1966. The first docking was to occur during the Gemini 6 flight, but the Gemini 6 Agena docking module failed to reach orbit.

Gemini 8 began a slow tumble shortly after docking. Per mission rules, Armstrong undocked from the Agena. When he did, their spacecraft began spinning about 1 revolution every second. The astronauts were on the verge of blacking out when Armstrong finally regained control of the vehicle and stopped the spinning. Had he not been able to gain control, both astronauts would have died in space. It was Armstrong's courage and the calmness with which he handled the situation that caused the NASA planners to choose him to command the first manned landing on the moon.

How is a robot useful in space?

Robots are useful in space to accomplish tasks that astronauts can't do by themselves as well as helping them. They are used in construction, scanning, maintenance, and docking procedures, amongst other tasks.

Did it start with the Mercury astronauts?

The Mercury astronauts were the first Americans to go in Space in 1961.

What are the astronauts' achievements?

The early Soyuz and Mercury astronauts found out that man could survive in space. That meant eating, sleeping, going to the bathroom, and even manipulating the spacecraft in space. Astronauts on both sides of the Space Race found out in the mid 1960s that man could work outside the spacecraft with proper restraints. Gemini astronauts performed the first rendezvous and docking in space, an important milestone in reaching the moon. The Apollo astronauts achieved the first manned flight to the moon, showing that man can survive a trip through the Van Allen Belt. Apollo 11 showed man could land on the moon and return safely to the earth. Astronauts on Soviet space stations, Mir, Skylab, and the Space Shuttle showed that man can survive in space for months at a time. They also built the International Space Station, and continue making advances in all scientific areas.

Why are astronauts considered pioneers?

A pioneer is someone who is first to do something, particularly things like going to new places. The first astronauts are pioneers as they were the first people to go into space. Since then there have been many firsts for many astronauts, like first space walks, first orbit to the moon, first visit to the moon and so on. Astronauts continue to do new things and become the first people to do them. As long as space exploration continues to develop, there will always be pioneers amongst the astronauts.

Have humans made love in space?

Both the Soviet/Russian space authorities and NASA claim that there has been no sexual activity in space. However, tantalizing tidbits of information suggest that there has been at least a few times when astronauts have completed their own personal docking maneuvers.
