== == POW camp number 23 was located about 50 miles to the east of the town of Timmins, at a lumber cutting camp. Before the war began, the camp had been privately owned, with about a 40 man crew cutting trres and making them into board lumber which was shipped out to market on the railway which was about 5 miles away. During 1941, the camp was taken over by the Canadian Government and converted into a prisoner of war camp. The inmates were all Germans who had been captured by the Allies. Putting them in such a isolated place, in Canada, prevented them from trying to escape. There was no place to go, with hundreds of miles of bush and lakes, with no roads, except the railway line. No fences or guards were needed to control them. The Germans did their own cooking and laundry, and they worked five days a week cutting trees down, and hauling them to the mill with horse teams. At one time there were about 300 POW's in the camp. At the end of the war, they were sent back to Germany, and some of them came back to live in Canada.
