The first undisputed sighting of the Pole was on May 12, 1926 by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen and his American sponsor Lincoln Ellsworth from the airship Norge. In the strictest sense of attaining a pole, this does not count, as he never set foot there. Although some people credit Amundsen with being the first man to reach both poles.
Amundsen set off exploring at age 21 and he did so, actively until he died at age 53. His departure dates depended on his destination.
To continue his journey, Amundsen must pass the threshold of the Antarctic Circle, which is located at approximately 66.5 degrees south latitude. This geographical boundary marks the point where he can access the polar regions, allowing him to proceed with his exploration of Antarctica. Crossing this threshold is significant as it symbolizes the transition into the harsh and challenging environment of the polar frontier.
