Edward Teach, otherwise known as Blackbeard, called Bath, North Carolina his home. He sailed the ship called the Queen Anne's Revenge. Blackbeard held the city of Charleston hostage in May of 1718. He later temporarily stopped being a pirate and retired to Bath with his 14th wife. He returned to pirating ways in November and was captured by Lieutenant Robert Maynard. Maynard cut off Blackbeard's head and hung it from the bow of his ship.
Well, he's dead. He was killed off the coast of North Carolina and his body was tossed overboard. Captain Robert Maynard hung his severed head from his bow, and was displayed as a warning to other pirates. His head eventually was stolen by his supporters and vanished. It is rumoured his skull was lined with silver and used as a chalice. The museum in Carolina claims to have it on display, however this is yet to be proven.
He isn't buried. He was killed at sea during a battle with Lieutenant Robert Maynard who was sent after Blackbeard by the governor of Virginia. His body was decapitated and the body was thrown overboard. The head was tied to the bowsprit when Maynards crew headed back to shore. Legend has it that the headless body of Blackbeard swam around the ship three times before it sank. This all took place in Okracoke Inlet off of North Carolina.
As an adult, Blackbeard, whose real name was Edward Teach, primarily lived in the West Indies, particularly in the area of Bath, North Carolina. He also spent time in various ports along the eastern seaboard of the American colonies. His base of operations was often associated with the Outer Banks region, where he engaged in piracy and established a notorious reputation.
