Depends what you like. Some areas are more Asian, some more indian, some very rough. Plus depends whether you want to buy or rent. Cost of living is expensive compared to what Auckland wages are but they pay better wages than the rest of NZ. Remuera is upmarket as is Mission Bay and St Heliers. A good in between area is Meadowbank, Herne Bay or Glendowie area nice (but you will be within 5/10 mins of a rough area no matter where you live in Auckland). The North Shore of Auckland is safer and nicer though and less crime.
