Farewell Spit is a 30 km long, sandy spit in the northwestern tip of the South Island of New Zealand. The northern side of the spit is exposed to the open Tasman Sea, whilst the southern side is made up of several kilometres of mudflats. The original wooden lighthouse on Farewell Spit, positioned high on a network of wooden steps, was commissioned in 1870.
