Different languages have different styles, vocabularies and grammars.
If a translator just translated the words of 'language 1' (L1) word-for-word into 'langauge 2' (L2), invariably the result would be 'incorrect' in the new/second language.
The translator therefore has to convert the meaning of L1 into something in L2 that conveys the same meaning. He may have to use words that do not have exact equivalents in both languages. He may have to add words for it to make sense. He may have to use idioms and expressions that are in common usage in L2 but which are unknown in L1.
For example some languages don't have an indefinite article (i.e. 'a', as in 'a dog'). So, to translate that language into English the traslator would have to add an 'a' where it is required in 'proper English'.
A good translator will be very familiar with both languages and make necessary adjustments and changes throughout the translation to ensure that the ideas being communicated are identical with, or as close as possible to, the original.
