Lyman Frank Baum [May 15, 1856-May 6, 1919] was born in Chittenango, New York. But he spent most of his early and teen years at the family estate, which was called Rose Lawn. The first thirty years of his life were spent largely in different locations in the state of New York. He then spent three years in South Dakota, before relocating to Chicago, Illinois. By 1914, he had moved to California, where he spent the rest of his life.

Lyman Frank Baum [May 15, 1856-May 6, 1919] began his writing career at a very young age. His first early writing effort was 'The Rose Lawn Home Journal' for family and friends. The second was 'The Stamp Collector' and 'Baum's Complete Stamp Dealers' Directory'. At the same time, Baum began a second career as a stamp dealer. Baum's third career was as a breeder of fancy poultry. He specialized in raising the Hamburg chicken. This career began, in 1876, when Baum was 20 years old. In 1880, Baum went back to writing. He published a monthly trade journal, 'The Poultry Journal'. Six years later, at the age of 30, he published his first book, 'The Book of the Hamburgs: A Brief Treatise upon the Mating, Rearing, and Management of Different Varieties of Hamburgs'. At the same time, he seriously embarked on a career in the theater. These careers all were pursued on, or close to, the family home at Rose Lawn, New York. But he moved to Syracuse to work as a clerk in his brother-in-law's dry goods store. During his years there, however, he kept up his acting career, under the names of Louis F. Baum and George Brooks. In 1880, Baum moved to Richburg, New York. His father, who had made his money in barrel manufacturing and in oil, built Baum a theater. There, Baum wrote plays and set up an acting company. Eight years later, in 1888, Baum moved to Aberdeen, Dakota Territory. He opened a store called 'Baum's Bazaar'. With the store's bankruptcy, Baum turned to editing'The Aberdeen Saturday Pioneer'. With the newspaper's failure in 1891, Baum moved to Chicago, Illinois. Baum became a reporter for the 'Evening Post'. He edited a magazine for advertizing agencies, and worked as a traveling salesman. In 1897, Baum was able to turn to writing full time with the success of 'Mother Goose in Prose'. Two years later, in 1899, Baum wrote 'Father Goose, His Book', which became the best-selling children's book of the year. And his Oz series writing career took off the following year, in 1900, with the publication of 'The Wizard of Oz'. Two years later, Baum was involved what has come to be called the 1902-1903 stage version of 'The Wizard of Oz'. In 1914, Baum made his last career move, into film production. He set up his own film company, The Oz Film Manufacturing Company.
