The doll itself was already constructed and sitting atop a toy store shelf waiting to be bought for the Christmas season, when one night in Chicago a murderer named Charles Lee Ray and a local police officer who has been tracking him named Detective Norris, are having a foot pursuit in the middle of the night ultimately resulting in a gun battle where Charles gets hit in the gut and upon this happening his get away driver, Eddie abandons him. With nowhere to go, and losing blood, he breaks into the toy store with Norris following. He knows that due to the severity of his wound that he will die soon, so he must "find somebody". In life, Charles had been a student of black magic and the occult, and was taught a soul transfer chant from his teacher John, whom he later kills. Having been taught this chant, though never believing in it much, he finds the nearest thing close to his dying body on the floor, which just so happens to be the Good Guy Doll and performs it. Upon the chants final verse, lightning rips into the store on the location where Charles and the doll are which knocks the advancing Mike back several feet into shelves. He gets to his feet and sees a dead Charles on the floor with a seemingly harmless doll next to him. And so it begins...
