I just saw this on PBS a couple of months ago; here's a bit of info for you.... William Wyler, the original director, saw the screen-test of McDowall and chose him for the part. Wyler was replaced later by director John Ford. Ford wanted to shoot the movie in Wales, but events in Europe during World War II made this impossible. If my memory is correct I think most of that movie was filmed in Monumemt Valley National Park. Several of John Ford/John Wayne movies were filmed there for obvious reasons. It is breathtakingly beautiful.
