The 1960's. By 1969 only five European colonies remained on the Continent of Africa, three of which were Portugese, one French and one Spanish. The UK did, however, regain sovereignty over Zimbabwe in 1979 and the country reverted back to Colony status until independence in 1980.
The country that suffered the most lost territory as a result of the unification of Italy was Austria. The process for the unification of Italy started in 1815 with the Congress of Vienna.

Britain, France and Spain were the first countries to colonize in the New World. Spain was the first, since it was the most powerful European country, adn it colonized Mexico and the West. France's colonies were farther north, in what is now Canada. Britain was last to colonize and it had the 13 bristish colonies split in three colonies: New England, Middle, and Southern colonies.
