Canada, as a country, has had only one Capital: Ottawa.

There was a pre-Confederation colony known as the Province of Canada. It was created by the Act of Union, 1840, which joined the colonies of Upper Canada and Lower Canada into one political entity.

The capital of the Province of Canada moved several times. It was variously located in Toronto, Kingston, Montréal and Québec City, before finally being settled in Ottawa, by Order of Queen Victoria, a couple of years before Confederation.
