The first character to die is jhonny, he was a greaser who was trying to save some kids from a burning building with ponyboy when a burning peice of wood fell on his back. Dally was not trying to help save the kids but was there where he rushed jhonny to the hospital with ponyboy where he died.

∙ 13y agoThe parents died first ..... but they weren't in the novel at all. So Johnny really "died first". After Johnny it was Dally (Dallas Winston)
