New Zealand has always been a separate group of islands lying to the SE of Australia. But several hundred metres down, there is a large proto continent called by the geologists Zealandia, but it has not been totally above the sea level.

New Zealand is a group of islands in the SW Pacific. It indeed does lie on a submerged landmass of continental size, and this is known as Zealandia. It is roughly the size and shape of the Indian sub-continent.

Sometimes New Zealand is grouped with Australia as Australasia, but this has little political or geographic significance.
