You need at least a diode with a current limit of 7Amps. Best to use a 10A or more, to allow a little headroom. You are using it as a blocking diode and will therefore want a low forward voltage drop. The best type for this is a schottky type and as it is going to supply a high forward current you will need proper heat sinking.
The best one I can find is a type MBR1435CT
This is in a TO220 package with a heatsink tab on it.

Describe forward bias of a diode?

When the polarity of the battery is such that electrons are allowed to flow through the diode, then the diode is said to be forward-biased. Conversely, when the battery is "backward" and the diode blocks current, then the diode is said to be reverse-biased. A diode may be thought of as like a switch: "closed" when forward-biased and "open" when reverse-biased.

How does connecting a battery to a circuit make charge flow?

well its simple whoever asked this question is thick. It gives charge because a battery is the source of electricity therefore firing up the current and electron.

Why must you make current flow through the meter in order to measure it?

You don't. ...unless you want to directly measure the current in a circuit branch. That's the purpose of an ammeter. You can also use a volt meter if you know the resistance of a resistor in that branch to determine current (assuming DC circuit here) - current = voltage / resistance. This may be more useful for circuitry that is on a breadboard, since inserting an ammeter may not be practical.

How does the regulator control the output to the battery?

the regulator monitors battery or system voltage and adjusts current flow or magnetic field to the rotor. The magnetism of the rotor causes power to be generated in the stator. This supplies power to run the vehicle ands charge the battery. In other words the regulator adjusts the magnetic power required to make electricity. In operation it keeps vehicle system voltage to between 14.0 to 14.7 volts.

How does an electric current flow?

The very word current means 'flow'. Electric current is the flow of electric charges. There are two kind of electric charges. Scientists considered the electric current as the flow of positive charges. But in case of solid metals, only negatively charged electrons are able to move freely where as the positively charged protons are held firmly within the core of the atoms. So electric current is due to negatively charged electrons. Now we have to differentiate these two. How? Let us consider the current due to flow of positive charges as conventional current flow. Hence conventional current direction is always opposite to the direction of flow of electrons. To keep the charges in motion we need a force to push them. So we use a chemical cell which has electrical potential difference between the two terminals. This potential difference is named as " electro motive force", in short "emf". So emf is responsible to make electric charges to flow.

What is the function of diode used in calculator?

A diode is a semiconductor device that allows current to flow in only one direction. Although there may be several reasons why there is a diode on a calculator PC board, a common reason would be to protect the device from a battery inserted in the wrong direction (if battery powered) or if an AC adapter is used, to make AC into DC current.

Which side of a diode should be connected to the positive voltage supply to make it conduct current?

The anode side of a diode should be connected to the positive voltage supply to make it conduct current. When the anode is at a higher potential than the cathode, the diode becomes forward biased and allows current to flow through it. If the cathode is at the higher potential, the diode remains reverse biased and does not conduct.

What is a ordinary diode?

A diode is an electronic component that will only allow current to flow through it in one direction. It is analogous to the valve in a bicycle tyre, which only lets air in but not out (except when you press the release tab). So if you connect a diode in a simple DC circuit one way around, the circuit will be closed and any devices on the circuit will work. If you connect it the other way around the circuit is open and no current will flow. I presume by 'ordinary diode' you mean a diode that is not a light emitting diode (LED). A LED is just a diode that emits light when current flows through it. Its purpose is to make light. A non-LED diode doesn't emit light. Its purpose is to allow current through a circuit in only one direction. A common use for ordinary diodes is in "rectifying circuits" which convert AC to DC.There are many other uses though.

What can change alternating current to direct current?

A rectifier is used to convert alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). The rectifier allows current flow in one direction only, converting the back-and-forth flow of AC to a constant flow in DC circuits.

Which is better as a switch diode or transistor?

Basically a diode is a combinstion of pN junction but the transistor is made with three terminals EMITTER,, BASE ,, JUNCTION.. and diode is just a combination of positive and negative terminal . diode and transistors are both used as a switch .. but a transistor is more widly udes than a diode. and diode has also very important in electronics DIGITAL SYSTEM to make the screen's ..and transistors are used in amplifiers the group of transistors make an amplifier . and we use a diode in seven segment display ....diode is small and carry less current due to its small size but transistor get large current. A2 A diode has two connections. It allows current to flow in one direction and not in the other. They are used for rectification in power supplies, detection of AM radio, blocking of current etc. A Transistor has three connections. Current is controlled between the emitter and collector, by a small current on the base. They are used as switches, amplifiers and regulators.

What is the difference between rectifier diode and zener diode?

A: They are both diodes. The difference lies in the application. A rectifier is used to rectify AC current into pulsating current. The zener diode is used to regulate a voltage source to the zener voltage when connected in the reverse direction. ************************************************************** If you look at the characteristic curves of a rectifier diode and a zener diode, you will see that they are similar, but the reverse curve of the zener has a much sharper bend at what is called the "knee". It is at this point on the zener's curve at which it operates.

How does push to make switch work?

Push-To-Make switch is a switch in which pressure is applied to the switch for it to let the electricl current flow through.

What is zener break down voltage?

The point in the forward operating region of the characteristic curve where conduction starts to increase rapidly is called Knee voltage of a PN Junction Diode. The breakdown voltage of a diode is the minimum reverse voltage to make the diode conduct in reverse.(or) Breakdown voltage is a parameter of a diode that defines the largest reverse voltage that can be applied without causing an exponential increase in the current in the diode.-- Dinakar

How can a battery turn on?

A battery that is ready for use is already "on" as we understand it. The chemical reactions that provide the difference of potential are "ready to go" and drive current flow. It remains for the operator to make the final connection, like the flipping of a switch, to complete the circuit so the current will have a place to flow. The voltage, which is electromotive force, or the force that will cause electrons to flow, is present on the terminals of a good battery. This voltage will be present across the poles of the open switch, too. Close the switch and current flows. The battery was already "on" and waiting for a circuit to appear so it could force current through it.

In order to make an electric current flow it is necessary to have?

In order to make an electric current flow, you need a closed circuit that includes a source of electrical energy, such as a battery or a power outlet, and a complete path for the current to flow, typically made up of conductive materials like copper wires. The flow of electric current occurs when there is a potential difference (voltage) between two points in the circuit, causing electrons to move from one point to another.

What does reversing the direction of the electron flow in the battery do?

The voltage measured across every component in the circuit would take on the opposite polarity from what it was originally. If there are any diodes in the circuit, then current might stop flowing in some branches where it formerly existed, or start flowing in branches where there was no current before.
