France lost Canada and Louisiana as a result of what the French call la guerre de sept ans (Seven Years War, as in Britain).
If France had won the seven years war the British Empire would have lost all of its North American lands excluding a few Carribean Island. The United States might not exist and would probably be speaking French instead of English.
