Canada's only "island province," Prince Edward Island, is now connected to mainland Canada via the Confederation Bridge. The bridge, which was opened in 1997, is 13 kms long and spans the Northumberland Strait between Borden, PEI, and Jourimain, New Brunswick.
The Confederation Bridge does not connect Charlottetown (PEI's capital) directly with mainland Canada.
Borden, PEI, is at the northern end of the Bridge. Borden is much closer to Summerside than to Charlottetown. The Bridge connects PEI with Canada, but Charlottetown is at least an hour's drive away from Borden.
Charlottetown is almost as close to the Woods Island ferry as it is to the Bridge.
Prince Edward Island is only connected to the rest of Canada by The Confederation Bridge. The bridge is curved, 12.9 kilometers long and is the longest bridge in the world crossing ice-covered water. More than a decaded after its construstion, it endures as one of Canada's top engineering achievements of the 20th century.
