Using the Electoral Vote alone the tie of 73 to 73 votes between Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr takes the prize. In 1876 the vote 185 to 184 with Hayes over Tilden. Tilden won the popular vote in that contest. The Kennedy vs Nixon popular vote was only a one tenth of one percent spread, but the Electoral Vote was solid for JFK.
