In the 1939 film version of The Wicked Witch of Oz, viewers don't know in which direction Kansas is from the beautiful, enchanted, magical land of Oz. So we don't know from which direction Dorothy Gale's house approaches the Blue Munchkin Country of the East. We just know that Dorothy's house and the Wicked Witch, presumably of the East, travel in the same directionto the same, fatal point. Later in the film, Dorothy Gale, her pet dog Toto, and their three friends the Cowardly Lion, the Scarecrow, and the Tin Woodman wend their way down the Yellow Brick Road of Munchkinland to the Emerald City of Oz. The Emerald City is in the center of Oz. Therefore, the five friends must be going westward. And that's the same direction that the Wicked Witch of the West therefore goes when she hops on her broom, to get to the Emerald City first.
