John Jacob Astor was the wealthiest passenger on board the Titanic and, as well as his wife Madeleine Astor, his party included his servant, his wife's maid and nurse, and his pet Airedale, Kitty. At 11:40 p.m. on April 14, 1912 the Titanichit an iceberg and began sinking. At first Astor did not believe the ship was in any serious danger, but later he helped his wife into a lifeboat. He asked if he could join her, mentioning her "delicate condition" (she was five months pregnant at the time), but the officer in charge told him not until all the women and children were away. Astor reportedly stood back and asked for the lifeboat number, then, after lighting a cigarette, he tossed his gloves to Madeleine. She survived. John Jacob Astor IV's body was recovered by the steamer Mackay-Bennett on April 22 not far from the sinking:

Titanic had two captains. Starting March 25th Capt. Haddock commanded her for about a week. Then she was reassigned to Capt. Edward John Smith. She also had harbor pilots like George Bowyer, who was shuttled in to guide her into Southampton.

A Google search of "John Jacob Astor" turned up over 200,000 hits. (Be forewarned, however, that a person by the same name was on the Titanic, and might have been a descendant of the original Astor.) Any respectable book about the fur trade, especially the Canadian fur trade, will likely include references to Astor. Books about the major Canadian fur trading companies (the Hudson's Bay Company and its rival the North West Company) will probably lead you to a valuable bibliography. J. M. Bumsted and Peter C. Newman are two modern Canadian authors whose books about the Canadian fur trade have included material about Astor.
John Jacob Astor was one of the two men to start the public reference library system in New York City. James Lenox was the other. The two combined their libraries with Samuel Tilden's bequest of more than $2 million and thus the NYPL was started.
