In Rudyard Kipling's story "Red Dog" (1895) the wolf pack that adopted Mowgli the "man-cub" is threatened by a marauding pack of dhole (the red dogs of the title). With the help of the cunning old python Kaa, Mowgli devises a plan to defeat the dogs. The "Little People" are wild bees that live in huge hives in cliffs above a raging river. Mowgli lures the dogs to the top of the cliff and then jumps into the river, stirring up the bees. Mowgli doesn't get stung because he has smeared himself with garlic to repel the bees, and Kaa catches him to prevent him being killed by the rapids. Many of the dogs are stung to death or drown, or are attacked by Mowgli. Those that survive face the entire wolf pack downstream in a climactic battle. The full story can be found at Wikisource. Be warned, parts of it are quite violent for a "children's" story. http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/The_Second_Jungle_Book/Red_Dog
