I was wondering about Russ Mitchell's reason for leaving the Early Morning Show as well. According to the New York Times dated January 13, 2010, Russ Mitchell left the Early Morning Show but "will become the national correspondent for CBS and will continue to be the anchor of the Sunday edition of the "CBS Evening News." His decision to leave the Early Morning Show apparently was made before the change in executive producers for the show. I hope the change was actually his own.
