You could say that before Confederation, 1867, the British, the French and the Americans (well they tried, the War of 1812- we burnt their White House down. lol) took turns and eventually the Brits won most of the country and the French got the province of Quebec. You'd really need to read a book on the History of Canada to get the whole picture...don't use wikipedia, it may not be correct as anyone can, basically, write whatever they want and pass it off as the truth.
