Yes Dally does go to the rumble in the Outsiders. He was suposed to be in the hospital because he was in the fire. When Ponyboy and Two-Bit came to visit he asked for Two-Bits 10 inch switch blade, he then hide it under his pillow. Later, Dally treatens the nurse to let him go with Two-Bits switch blade.

Ponyboy needed to be at the rumble to show his solidarity with his fellow greasers. The greasers stood together as brothers against the society that looked down upon them much as low income youngsters do today. It was important that he participated in the fight to prove his loyalty.

Ponyboy thinks that his oldest brother Darry is uncaring and cold at the begining of the book. Although at the end of the book Pony realizes that Darry really does care for him.
