He didn't. Darry shouted, "Come on. I'll fight anyone!" And Paul stepped up. But I guess Darry didnt want to fight him because he use to be his buddy. Darry just didnt want to lose his manlyness and step down.
Darry and Paul!! (:
Because Ponyboy was just in a burning church. Darry was being a good older brother and wanted to protect him.
Darry and Paul!
His brothers Darry and Soda get worried that he is out past his curfew and Darry got mad at Ponyboy and hit him after Soda was sticking up for Ponyboy and then Darry started to yell at Soda and then Ponyboy started yelling at Darry for yelling at Soda and after that was when Darry hit Ponyboy.
Ponyboy feels sick but he wants to fight in the rumble anyway, so he can avenge Johnny. He doesn't want Two-Bit to tell Darry this because Darry would make him stay home.
Darry liked to fight to show off his strength and skills.

Because Darry thinks he is out of shape. :)
They told darry to take care of him and if the does something bad again they are going to be split up!
the name is darry and the effects that darry's discipline had on ponyboy was that pony did not think that darry loved him or even cared for him because all the seemed to do was fight, since their parent's death, with darry mostly yelling at ponyboy.
In the novel "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton, Darry wanted to fight Paul because he was frustrated and overwhelmed by the responsibilities of taking care of his younger brothers, Ponyboy and Sodapop, after their parents died. Darry felt pressure to provide for his family and ensure their well-being, leading to a buildup of stress and tension. His confrontation with Paul was a result of this pent-up frustration and his desire to assert his authority and protect his family.
Darry's motivarion throughout The Outsiders is to keep his family safe and together. Since the Curtis boy's parents are dead Darry (as the oldest) has to make enough money to support him and his brothers. He also needs to keep Soda and Pony out of trouble so social services don't think he's a bad guardian and put Soda and Pony in a foster home.
I put--- Ponyboy feels stupid and he is ashamed that all his life he thought Darry didn't care for him but really Darry was giving his all into raising the boys (Ponyboy & Sodapop.)
