In the book, "The Outsiders", Paul and Darry hate each other because Darry is jealous of Paul. Darry's parents died and left the boys to fend for themselves with the oldest brother in charge. This meant that Darry was not able to have the things that Paul had.

Darry and Paul Holden (Holden is Paul's last name) were buddies long ago. But now the two of them hate each-other because Darry never became a Soc like Paul did, because his parents had died when he was young and he didn't have enough money.

Explain how Darry an Ponyboy play tug of war with soda?

Every time darry and ponyboy have a fight they want soda to take their side. Soda does not want to take either side because he loves them both equally. They play tug of war because they want back up from him and sense soda is the only other family member left he gets stuck in the middle a lot. For example in the book and in the movie (the outsiders the complete novel) the three of them are sitting down to dinner when darry and pony get into one of their arguments. darry says his thing and pony get mad and asks soda, "Is that not right Soda?" (or something along those lines) thus drawing Soda into their argument and trying to get him to take sides
