He wants to kill him because Professor Twerlany made a prophecy when she was signing up for the job of divination professor at Hogwarts. It was when harry potter was almost born. The prophecy said that at the end of July a wizard will be born. He will be the only wizard who will be able to kill Lord Voldemort. Neither can live while the other survives. So Voldemort knew that it was Harry potter and wanted to kill him ever since. Voldemort went to Hogwarts about fifty years before Harry Potter. He was in Slytherin and spoke parseltough. He found all the secrets of Hogwarts and hid many of his hot horcruxes there. He thought of it as his home. His mother died when he was just born. She ran him to the orphinage
