Kgalema Petrus Motlanthe was President of South Africa from 2008 September 25 to 2009 May 9.

Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma became President of South Africa on May 9 of 2009.

Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma joined politics with the African National Congress in 1959, before it was banned. in 1961. He then joined the South African Communist Party. Zuma was imprisoned for 10-years for 'conspiring to overthrow the government'. In 1990, the ANC was unbanned, and Zuma was a key ANC leader in the negotiations for the change of the country. Later elected to parliament in 1999, Zuma became Health Minister and Deputy President of South Africa. In the 2009 election, his party (ANC) won and helped elect him to the role of president. Jacob Zuma became the 4th President of South Africa (since the end of Apartheid) on 2009 May 29.

The role of president is elected by elected members of parliament, thus indirectly elected.
