The part of strong and authoritative detective Steve McGarrett, head of the fictional state police task force known as Hawaii Five-O, was played by veteran film and television actor Jack Lord.
Series producer Leonard Freeman originally offered Have Gun Will Travel star Richard Boone the part of McGarrett, but Boone turned it down. Gregory Peck and Robert Brown were also considered for the part. Jack Lord, who had played the part of CIA agent Felix Leiter in the James Bond film Dr. No was at the time living in Beverly Hills, and was asked to fill the role at the last moment.
Lord, having worked with Freeman previously, read for the part on a Wednesday, was cast for the part and flew to Hawaii two days later, and was in front of the cameras the following Monday. He would become one of the show's co-owners and producers.
