Duke had been Capcom during the Apollo 10 descent to 50,000 feet. That mission prepared the way for Apollo 11 to attempt the first landing. Neil Armstrong was in Mission Control during the Apollo 10 descent and he liked the way Duke handled the descent, so he asked that Duke be the Capcom for his Apollo 11 landing. 3 years later, Duke landed on the moon with John Young during Apollo 16. Normally, the Capcom is the only person allowed to speak directly to a crew during a mission. However, because of the historical significance of Apollo 11, the President of the United States, Richard Nixon, made a short speech directly to the astronauts shortly after they put up the flag on the moon. Armstrong was prepared for the president's speech, but Aldrin was taken completely by surprise.
