Capcom, Charlie Duke in ''Mission Control'' talked to the Apollo 11 astronauts as they descended and landed on the moon. At the time, the Capsule Communicator (Capcom) was always an astronaut. It was Duke who gave Armstrong and Aldrin the "Go" for descent and again for landing. When Armstrong said "Houston, Tranquility Base here, the Eagle has landed." he was talking to Charlie Duke. Duke had been Capcom during the Apollo 10 descent to 50,000 feet. That mission prepared the way for Apollo 11 to attempt the first landing. Neil Armstrong was in Mission Control during the Apollo 10 descent and he liked the way Duke handled the descent, so he asked that Duke be the Capcom for his Apollo 11 landing. 3 years later, Duke landed on the moon with John Young during Apollo 16. Bruce McCandless was the EVA Capcom who spoke to Armstrong and Aldrin while they were walking on the moon. McCandless became an astronaut in 1966, but didn't make his first spaceflight unitl 1984. Normally, the Capcom is the only person allowed to speak directly to a crew during a mission. However, because of the historical significance of Apollo 11, the President of the United States, Richard Nixon, made a short speech directly to the astronauts shortly after they put up the flag on the moon. Armstrong was prepared for the president's speech, but Aldrin was taken completely by surprise.
