There were, in effect Two Sullivan shows. the first one was called The Toast of the Town. The later, better known was, of course, the Ed Sullivan Show broadcast live from the Ed Sullivan theatre ( which still exists) Disney aside, I cannot recall this type of monopolistic stuff with any other TV entertainer ( and Disney- what with Disneyland< clearly went too far in hooting his horn). I think the first Sullivan program came out in l952 as Toast of the Town. Given the live entertainment and super variety of acts, ratings were always high.
Ed Sullivan is best known for his weekly variety show that ran for more than 20 years, every Sunday night. Some of the most famous people in show buisness first appeared on the Ed Sullivan show. The Beattles, Elvis Presley, just to name a couple.
Elvis appeared on the ed Sullivan show in October 28, 1956. Thank you!!
