There were more than four, but the four most prominent were the England, Spain, France, and the Netherlands. Russia and Sweden also explored North America, but their actions are largely dismissed since Russia explored Alaska (as opposed to the more popular eastern USA, eastern Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean) and Sweden's colonies were promptly annexed by the French or Dutch.
