It is taking something of a quantum leap- but the old ( space Opera) Lost In Space was based in part on the Swiss Family Robinson. The title is something of an oxymoron as Switzerland is land-locked and it is odd a Swiss man would be licensed to be a Ship Captain, though they do have a merchant marine of sorts. The original title of Lost In Space- used in the comic book version- was Space Family Robinson. The title is a little misleading as one of the crew members was clearly a NASA officer of some type, and Dr. Smith was not a family member.
The story is based on a scotsman: Alexander Selkrik.
