Because it's about the greasers- the rejected, the social outcasts. They are not welcome in society. They just don't fit in. Look at the characters' relationships with their guardians, those who are top raise them. They don't blend in because they were never taught how. Johnny, with his abusive parents. Ponyboy, lacking a father AND a mother being raised by an atypical family of the neighborhood gang of hoodlums and his two older brothers. Dally, that little schemer whose father doesn't care whether he lives or dies. It's really not that hard to figure it out.
