It is not for man to buy and sell his fellow man as working animals, so to speak. Slavery is a basic human-rights violation.. Man belongs to, and is under, the Laws of God! All the same, the practice existed in Biblical times- and there are few direct (Abolitionist) passages in The Bible.

If slavery began in 1619 why did it take 200 years for it to become such a divisive issue?

Although slavery as a practice began in the Americas in the 16th century, with the first shipment of slaves arriving in Virginia in the early 17th century, it was not until many years later that slavery would become a divisive issue in the United States. The fundamental reason was that slavery was not at first generally seen as immoral or otherwise wrong; that is, it was generally accepted to be natural or legitimate, and it would continue to be seen this way for many generations before a different view would become influential.

Who was Thomas R Dew?

He is a crazy person who is weird!! Thomas R. Dew, a young professor at William and Mary College in Virginia, was one of the earliest defenders of the institution of slavery. In the excerpts from his Review of the Debate in the Virginia Legislature of 1831 and 1832, published in 1832, Dew denied that slavery was unchristian, immoral, or undemocratic. In the years to follow his arguments were supplemented by almost everyone of importance in the South.

Why was abolishment of slavery bad?

Most people view slavery as a bad thing, and if you do, then having it abolished is a good thing. Abolished means destroyed, put an end to. So having slavery abolished wasn't a bad thing for the African Americans, or for the people who believed that it should be abolished. Though many of the people who owned slaves might not think it was good because they would then have to do the work that their slaves used to do for them, or they would have to pay their slaves/servants.
