Although the play/movie is basically "Romeo and Juliet" updated to early 1960's NYC, the music is what is the most memorable about it. Leonard Bernstein made an excellent score to it and it is what most people remember; that and the incredible opening sequence of the movie featuring the overhead shot of NYC while the gang member whistles to the other gang members.
An allusion is an implied or indirect reference to a person, event, or thing or to a part of another text. West Side Story is an allusion to Romeo and Juliet because much of the plot indirectly references the play.
It was not the typical boy-meets-girl romance with a happy ending. It was a tragedy based on Romeo & Juliet. Also, dance figured more prominently in advancing the plot than did previous musicals, reflecting the strengths of its director-choreographer Jerome Robbins.

The choreographer for the 1962 film version of 'The Music Man' was Onna White [March 24, 1922-April 8, 2005]. White previously had been responsible for the choreography for the stage version, in 1958. In fact, she received a Tony Award nomination for that version. Subsequently, she received a special Oscar for her choregraphy for 'Oliver!' [1968]. She was only one of two choreographers ever to receive such an honor. On the film version of 'The Music Man', she was assisted by Tom Panko [b. ca. 1926]. Panko again assisted White with 'Bye Bye Birdi' [1963].

The conflict in West Side Story is the conflict between "natives" and "immigrants." In this case the natives are the white Jets and the immigrants are the Puerto Rican Sharks, both street gangs in late 1950s New York City. The story, and the conflict, is a retelling of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, with the rival families recast as rival street gangs.
