The South African Nationalist government of 1948 passed the first laws about Apartheid. This affected every level of society. The nationalists (read Nazi if you wish) wanted to protect white jobs, so many jobs were reserved for whites only. Everybody was investigated for blacks in their family. People were officially designated white, black or 'coloured'. A Black in the family as many as 4 generations back would make you 'coloured' and could prevent you from many jobs.
