When it's dark, you can't see. Lots of your vision of places is obscured by shadows, like corners where things could hide. It's the darkness allowing things to hide that scares someone because they fear something is lurking in the shadows, ready to scare you in some way or another, including harm you.
In the day, you feel much better because you can see. Everything is lit up and in vision, so you can tell where everything is and what everything is.
If you want to know: I'm not afraid of the dark, but sometimes, after I watch a documentary of people being haunted, for about two days I'm wary of the dark. Afterwards, I'm perfectly fine again. But the thing is, I'm more afraid of the dark inside than outside. I'll wander around after dark outside, loving the cool night air, but inside I'm more freaked out. I don't know why, I'm just like that.
You would think I'd be more scared outside, where any animal could be and any stranger could approach. It's the opposite some reason. I just wanted to share that because I don't understand.
Most people are afraid of the dark because you cannot see, instigating someone's natural fear. Also, Hollywood always acts scary scenes in the dark which gets people's imagination going.
