Silent movies were the first movies invented, in the 1890s. People in the USA and France liked looking at moving pictures better than still photos, so they invented movies. Because of the difficulty of matching sound with picture, most films were silent until the end of the 1920s when The Jazz Singer (with Al Jolson) was released. Since then, most movies have had talking to go with the movies. I am sure if they could have invented the talking movie in the 1890s, they would have.
Silent Movies were called 'Silents', or Golden Silents, because they were (silent). One famous example of a Silent is The Sheik (1921), starring Rudolph Valentino as Ahmed Ben Hassan, by Paramount Pictures. FYI... • The 1920s were known as The Silent Era. • Sound was not introduced into movies until 1923. • Talkies (movies with sound) replaced Silents in 1930.
