The names of countries in English do not usually take an article at all; we speak of America, England, India, China, etc., without any articles.

There are some exceptions:

We do speak of the United States.

We do speak of the Netherlands.

We do sometimes speak of the Sudan.

We do sometimes speak of the Ukraine--though nowadays just plain Ukraine is preferred.

We do also speak of the Yukon.

Countries that are plural or have more than one part to their name often have 'the'

the Philippines, the United States.

Also other geographical names like mountain ranges use the:

the Andes

However the Solomon Islands now prefer just Solomon Islands
