Why did ABC cancel LOST?

"Lost" was never your average everyday scripted television series. It had a rich mythology and numerous, complex storylines involving the survivors' past and current experiences. The series was rarely a Top 10 attraction in the Nielsen ratings, but its fan base was so large, the show's episodes were among the most recorded for later viewing.

Three years ago, on May 7, 2007, ABC and "Lost" executive producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse announced that the series would run for three more seasons and end in 2010. It also was announced that each remaining season would have 16 episodes, instead of the usual 22.

ABC was pleased with the agreement because it gave the network enough episodes for syndication. It also allowed the producers to end the series on their own terms.

After the agreement, ABC stopped airing "Lost" episodes in September because viewers disliked reruns and long periods of time without new episodes. Starting with Season 4, "Lost" was held over until late January or early February, and then aired with fewer repeats and breaks.
