Economics. Its cheaper to have slaves to do really nasty drudge work for you, and you turn a higher profit at your business. Since slaves are not people, they have no rights, no raises, no health care, nothing. Since there was a very high demand for this kind of labor, the British saw pound signs and started into it. However, slavery was abolished in the UK in the early 1800's I believe.
