On one trip alone he acquired more than 80 pounds of gold and 26 tons of silver (plus trunks of jewels and coins). On one voyage he named an area of their claim "New Britain" and by entering their territory armed it was considered an act of war. King Phillip II of Spain even set a reward of 20,000 ducats (8 mill. dollars) for Drake. Elizabeth I meanwhile privately sponsored his trips because they were bringing England out of debt, but she knighted him Sir Francis Drake, infuriating Spain. What finally brought about war between Spain and England was when Drake took control over 3 Spanish ports in the New World: Santo Domingo, Cartagena, and St. Augustine.
Drake and Hawkins did not hate the Spanish, they were ambivalent. They certainly felt patriotism for England as it was their home country and they attacked Spanish shipping, but it was not out of hatred for the Spanish.
They attacked Spanish ships because it was commercially viable (piracy) and sanctioned by the English government. The Spanish were the most powerful empire of the day and by pilfering Spanish goods, the English were able to become wealthy as well. Therefore, the English government permitted the acquisition of Spanish goods through piracy. Drake, Hawkins, and numerous other Sea Dogs took up this enterprise.
