Because of following reasons:

1 - The position of Harper's Ferry was an untenable one, unless the defending force

were in possession of the height surrounding the place. John Brown had no sufficient men to provide for and, indeed his intention was that, that after having

gathered some band of freed slaves, he would leave Harper's Ferry, reach the mountain and start a guerrilla. But he and his associated got soon entrapped, without any chance of escaping.

2 - The main task of his raid, that is that of giving raise of a slaves insurrection in Virginia, was not to be achieved.
