Why does Michael Corleone change his mind and decide to join the family business in 'The Godfather'?

The more complete answer to this question threefold. 1. It was decided that the killing attempts of his father had to be revenged. 2. One of the targets was a policeman and the mob never put contracts on policemen. 3. Michael was known to be an 'outsider' (not a real part of the family), a non-combatant. So the other side would not expect violence from him. Once he killed the corrupt policeman in the restaurant -- before the family could convince the world that the cop was corrupt to take the heat off -- Michael was now a 'made man' and had to leave the country. From that point on he was 'family' in the mob sense of the word.
