Being a solider himself, Harry Truman knew that in battle, race, religion, and color do not matter. Having survived WWI, and being President at the end of WWII, he knew what was important. He also had a very strong sense of right and wrong, and could not justify sending African Americans off to fight Fascism abroad when they were segregated at home, including the armed forces. He simply felt that any man willing to die for his country should be afforded the same rights as any other man willing to die for his country.
