There were a number of reasons why Victor was abandoned by his parents. He was described being abandoned in the woods by his parents at ten age of 4 or 5. Even the scar on his neck remains a mystery. When he was observed by philosophers and scientist in Paris, they decried he was mute and suffering from idiocy-that might explain why he was so difficult for Abbe Sicard to educate, why his parents tried to kill him and abandoned him in the first place. Itard was the one who denied that was true and believed he could educate him and teach him language. Itard worked with him for 5 years from 1800-1805-Victor never learned how to speak and still never learned to be social around other people his age-even young boys. It was Itard who realized that Victor was suffering mental idiocy. Some cases of how and why was he abandoned in the first place remains a mystery. Some say Victor had autism and never learned langauge, some say he was born illegitimate . Some said he was in neglect and abused and treated like an animal before he was abandoned in the woods.

Why did Itard chose to give up on Victor?

Itard worked with Victor for many years from 1800 to 1806, even though Victor did make some progress. He still never learned speech and how to cope with human society. Victor was still drawn to nature. Because Victor would not speak and was not able bond with human society was the reason Itard chose to abandon him. Because the reports that say Victor was an "incurable idiot"-he at first pointed out that the cause of Victor's behavior was the solitude he lived in many years in the wild-but later on he did come to realize Victor did suffer from a mental disability. His progress with Victor eventually began to slow down until Itard chose to abandon his experiment. Victor was left to live in a small house with the housekeeper (known as Victor's caregiver) Madame Guerin.

How did people believe Victor the Wild Boy of Aveyron was deaf?

Although Victor could hear, he was sent to the National Institute for Deaf-Mutes in Paris. It was reported he never reacted to certain sounds and speech. Itard soon found out Victor was not deaf, and some sounds had no meaning to him. And he possibly couldn't understand speech because of being isolated in the wild for so many years.

Why was Victor the wild boy almost killed by his parents and left in the woods in the first place?

Some reports say possibly Victor was diagnosed with autism and mute at early age and was abandoned by his parents and almost killed with a knife on his throat when he was about 4 or 5. Some reports say Victor could've been raised as illegitimate and was possibly forced away from human contact. Some say Victor could've had abusive parents and isolated him before he was left for dead in the woods. But the case remains unsolved.
