∙ 11y agoNew lands, fame and fortune. The drive to explore is driven by wins in the past. Leave the tribal area, find easy hunting or many ripe berries and win! Those who explore find fame and fortune.
Or so it appears. Reality is a bit different. Spreading out, exploring, settling new lands only appears to result in fame and fortune because those are the only stories told. No one talks of the dead, they do not tell their stories, and they have many more stories of explorations than the living.
We only hear of those who traveled across the lands and found new wealth, easy living, and no doubt that is what drove all of us, including North American aboriginals to explore new worlds.

Fish. The abundance of fish is today hard to understand. Aboriginals only fished rivers and edges of lakes and oceans. Europeans fished open water and the open water off the coast of Canada was teeming with fish.
Then Furs. Furs were much easier to ship back to Europe and they were more profitable than fish or logs. Furs really kicked off a lot of settling and created many of todays Canadian cities.
Then safe country. Many settlers were actually refugees. Canada has a very deep history of being a safe country, dating back hundreds of years. Part of this history is the chance to start over, leave the big smoke of Europe an immoral lifestyle.
Then free land! Canada bought a lot of land in the West but it came with people. Canada used Immigration to address the issues of purchasing people who wanted a say in the government under which they would be ruled. Worst yet many didn't want to be taken over by Canada.
Canada went on an advertising spree, inviting in the world, rebellions were crushed, huge tracts of land were freed up to be cleared and settled. Canada has never looked back, we now have settlers from all over the world settling in today's Canada.
